Snow Fall

Snow Fall

The Avalanche at Tunnel Creek

The snow burst through the trees with no warning but a last-second whoosh of sound, a two-story wall of white and Chris Rudolph’s piercing cry: “Avalanche! Elyse!”
The very thing the 16 skiers and snowboarders had sought — fresh, soft snow — instantly became the enemy. Somewhere above, a pristine meadow cracked in the shape of a lightning bolt, slicing a slab nearly 200 feet across and 3 feet deep. Gravity did the rest.

Snow shattered and spilled down the slope. Within seconds, the avalanche was the size of more than a thousand cars barreling down the mountain and weighed millions of pounds. Moving about 7o miles per hour, it crashed through the sturdy old-growth trees, snapping their limbs and shredding bark from their trunks.

The avalanche, in Washington’s Cascades in February, slid past some trees and rocks, like ocean swells around a ship’s prow. Others it captured and added to its violent load.
Somewhere inside, it also carried people. How many, no one knew.

The slope of the terrain, shaped like a funnel, squeezed the growing swell of churning snow into a steep, twisting gorge. It moved in surges, like a roller coaster on a series of drops and high-banked turns. It accelerated as the slope steepened and the weight of the slide pushed from behind. It slithered through shallower pitches. The energy raised the temperature of the snow a couple of degrees, and the friction carved striations high in the icy sides of the canyon walls.

Elyse Saugstad, a professional skier, wore a backpack equipped with an air bag, a relatively new and expensive part of the arsenal that backcountry users increasingly carry to ease their minds and increase survival odds in case of an avalanche. About to be overtaken, she pulled a cord near her chest. She was knocked down before she knew if the canister of compressed air inflated winged pillows behind her head.

She had no control of her body as she tumbled downhill. She did not know up from down. It was not unlike being cartwheeled in a relentlessly crashing wave. But snow does not recede. It swallows its victims. It does not spit them out.
Snow filled her mouth. She caromed off things she never saw, tumbling through a cluttered canyon like a steel marble falling through pins in a pachinko machine.

At first she thought she would be embarrassed that she had deployed her air bag, that the other expert skiers she was with, more than a dozen of them, would have a good laugh at her panicked overreaction. Seconds later, tumbling uncontrollably inside a ribbon of speeding snow, she was sure this was how she was going to die.
Moving, roiling snow turns into something closer to liquid, thick like lava. But when it stops, it instantly freezes solid. The laws of physics and chemistry transform a meadow of fine powder into a wreckage of icy chunks. Saugstad’s pinwheeling body would freeze into whatever position it was in the moment the snow stopped.

After about a minute, the creek bed vomited the debris into a gently sloped meadow. Saugstad felt the snow slow and tried to keep her hands in front of her. She knew from avalanche safety courses that outstretched hands might puncture the ice surface and alert rescuers. She knew that if victims ended up buried under the snow, cupped hands in front of the face could provide a small pocket of air for the mouth and nose. Without it, the first breaths could create a suffocating ice mask.

The avalanche spread and stopped, locking everything it carried into an icy cocoon. It was now a jagged, virtually impenetrable pile of ice, longer than a football field and nearly as wide. As if newly plowed, it rose in rugged contrast to the surrounding fields of undisturbed snow, 20 feet tall in spots.

Saugstad was mummified. She was on her back, her head pointed downhill. Her goggles were off. Her nose ring had been ripped away. She felt the crushing weight of snow on her chest. She could not move her legs. One boot still had a ski attached to it. She could not lift her head because it was locked into the ice.

But she could see the sky. Her face was covered only with loose snow. Her hands, too, stuck out of the snow, one still covered by a pink mitten.
Using her hands like windshield wipers, she tried to flick snow away from her mouth. When she clawed at her chest and neck, the crumbs maddeningly slid back onto her face. She grew claustrophobic.

Breathe easy, she told herself. Do not panic. Help will come. She stared at the low, gray clouds. She had not noticed the noise as she hurtled down the mountain. Now, she was suddenly struck by the silence.

Real Madrid Tops The World's Most Valuable Sports Teams

Real Madrid has been a giant of European soccer for the past century, racking up a record 32 La Liga titles and nine UEFA Champions League trophies. The club’s success has fueled a global following and attracted superstar players over the last 20 years like Raul, Ronaldo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Real Madrid can add one more trophy to its case: It is now the world’s most valuable sports franchise, worth $3.3 billion, surpassing former No. 1 Manchester United. Los Blancos have the highest revenues of any team in sports ($650 million during the 2011-12 season), and revenues are up 62% over the last three years. Madrid’s operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and player trading) of $134 million is second only to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys among sports teams.

The World's 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams 2013

#1 Real Madrid

Value: $3.3 billion
Owner: Club members

Los Merengues finished runner-up this year in La Liga and the Copa del Ray, but nab the title of the world's most valuable sports team thanks to the highest revenues in sports ($650 million during the 2011-12 season). Real inked new deals with Adidas

The revenue spigot isn’t shutting off anytime soon. The club extended its kit supply deal with Adidas last year in a pact worth $42 million a year. Madrid inked its largest sponsorship deal ever this spring with Emirates. The deal to put the Dubai-based airline’s name on the team’s shirts is worth $39 million annually for five years starting next season. Madrid is planning a $320 million renovation to its stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, which could add $60 million a year to revenues by 2018.

While Real Madrid is the most valuable team in sports, don’t expect its owner to cash in. The team is run by billionaire Spanish construction mogul Florentino Perez, who serves as president. But the club is owned by its 93,000 members, who pay $195 annually. Members get discounts on tickets and merchandise. The only thing comparable in the U.S. among major sports teams is the Green Bay Packers, which is owned by its 364,000 shareholders.

United ranks second with a value of $3.17 billion. The club launched an initial offering to the public in August and the stock is up 23% since then. Fans cheered United’s record 20th English Premier League title this year, while investors are excited about soaring sponsorship revenues. The Red Devils signed a seven-year, $559 million shirt sponsorship deal last year with Chevrolet. The team inked a naming rights pact for its training facility with insurer Aon in April. The deal is expected to net United more than $200 million over eight years. The club has 32 official sponsors in total. The Glazer family, who control United, also own the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which ranks No. 28 with a worth of $1.03 billion. The Glazers are the only family to own two of the top 50 franchises.

Barcelona completes a sweep of the top three by European soccer clubs. The reigning La Liga champs are worth $2.6 billion on the strength of $613 million in annual revenue. Barca used part of its cash stockpile this spring to nab Brazilian sensation Neymar for a transfer fee of $74 million. The 21-year-old signed a five-year deal with the team. Barcelona has the biggest social media following of any sports team with 61 million Facebook fans and Twitter followers, which are fans more than the 30 richest NFL teams combined.

The New York Yankees are the most valuable U.S. sports team, ranking fourth overall at $2.3 billion. The Bronx Bombers generated $330 million in revenue last season from tickets and premium seating, which is more than the bottom seven MLB teams combined. MLB tries to level the playing field by docking the Yankees a nine-figure revenue-sharing check each year. Yankee Global Enterprises, which owns the team and an interest in the YES Network, sold part of its stake in YES in connection with Fox’s purchase of 49% of the regional sport network in late 2012. The team’s rights fee from YES will increase from $85 million this season to $350 million in 2042 as part of the deal. The Yankees lead a contingent of five New York City area teams on the list—two more than any other city.

The Dallas Cowboys are No. 5 at $2.1 billion, leading a group of 30 American football teams on our list (the NFL’s two teams that missed the top 50, the St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars, rank 51st and 52nd). The Cowboys have been the NFL’s most valuable team since 2007 thanks to the league’s highest sponsorship and premium seating revenues—a combined $200 million. The ‘Boys inked QB Tony Romo to a six-year, $108 million contract extension in March despite only one playoff win during his eight years under center.

Forbes has valued teams in the major sports leagues since 1998. The top 50 list is based on the valuations we’ve done for the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, soccer, Nascar and Formula 1 over the past year. The average team in the top 50 is worth $1.24 billion, up 16% over last year. There are 33 teams worth $1 billion versus 24 last year. Two years ago there weren’t any teams worth $2 billion; now there are five.

The 20 non-NFL teams in the top 50 include seven each from baseball and soccer, as well as three from the NBA led by the New York Knicks at No. 23, with a valuation of $1.1 billion. Rounding out the top 50 are two Formula 1 teams (No. 21 Ferrari and No. 47 McLaren) and the NHL’s most valuable team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, which ranks 31st at $1 billion.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona forward to extend contract until 2018

Lionel Messi has agreed a new contract with Barcelona, keeping him at the Spanish club until 2018.

The Argentina international, 25, has enjoyed a record-breaking year for club and country, scoring 90 goals in 2012.

Defender Carles Puyol, 34, and midfielder Xavi Hernandez, 32, have also agreed new deals that will keep them at Barcelona until 2016.

"In the coming weeks Puyol, Xavi and Messi will sign their respective new contracts," the club confirmed.

"This news means that FC Barcelona has secured its ties with three of its most important players."

Messi's current deal expires in June 2016, with Puyol's running until 2013 and Xavi until 2014.

All three players are products of the club's famed academy.

Messi has been with Barcelona since he was 13 and made his league debut as a 17-year-old against RCD Espanyol on 16 October 2004.

Swansea boss and ex-Barcelona playmaker Michael Laudrup:
"Messi is already, for me, one of the top of all time. He is out of this world and in a class of his own, but he is also playing in that team too. Let's see if he could be number one. He is up there with the greatest - Maradona, Pele and all those."

Messi, Puyol, Xavi

He has been in the best goal-scoring form of his career in 2012 and surpassed Gerd Mueller's 40-year-old record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year with a brace in a 2-1 win over Real Betis on 9 December.

Messi took his tally for the year to 90 on Sunday with another two goals as Barcelona defeated Atletico Madrid 4-1.

He has scored twice in each of the last eight games he has started.

Messi is in contention to be named World Player of the Year for a fourth time, having been included on a three-man shortlist alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid and Barcelona team-mate Andres Iniesta.

Puyol, meanwhile, made his Barcelona debut in 1999 before becoming captain in 2004 - the same year Messi made his league debut.

He has made over 560 appearances and captained the club to three Champions League, five La Liga and two Copa del Rey titles.

Xavi is the longest-serving Barcelona player of the three, having made his debut in 1998. He holds the record for the most appearances with the club with 651.

Barcelona are in a strong position to claim a 22nd La Liga title this season.

They have a nine-point lead at the top of the table, having won 15 of the 16 games they have played so far this season.

Messi and Neymar Jr, a duo worthy of FC Barcelona's history

The Argentinian and the Brazilian will pair up to lead Barça's attack next season
Before them, Kubala and César, Cruyff and Sotil, Kluivert and Rivaldo or Ronaldinho and Eto'o left their mark on the Club

Neymar Jr and Messi
Leo Messi and Neymar Jr will feature for the same team next season. The two footballers, who recently played against each other in a charity match, will form an attacking duo that could very well mark an era in Blaugrana football.

Deluge of goals at Les Corts
Barça’s first great attacking duo was formed by Césat Rodríguez (1942-55) and Ladislao Kubala (1951-61), two players who devoured defences at Les Corts Stadium for four years. The Hungarian revolutionised Barça in the 1950s with his tremendous skill and César played his 'Number 9' role to perfection. The two of them scored a total of 571 goals for the Blaugrana (291 for César and 280 for Kubala).

Peruvian-Dutch connection
Another legendary pair in FC Barcelona history was Johan Cruyff (1973-78) and Hugo Sotil
Johan Cruyff and Hugo Sotil

(19733-76). The two players started their Barça careers in the summer of '73, and the Dutchman’s magic, combined with Sotil’s mobility, allowed Barça to win the league title that season. The two players continued on at Barça for two additional seasons, until 1976, when Sotil returned to Peru.

Heroes of the 1982 Cup Winners Cup
Allan Simonsen and Quini
Three years later, in 1979, the Dane Allan Simonsen (1979-82) arrived to Can Barça where he paired up with Quini (1980-84). The two players shared the same team for only two seasons, but in that time they won the Copa del Rey and the Cup Winners Cup. Simonsen and Quini both scored in the final against Standard Liège (2-1).

Nearly two dreamlike seasons
The most devastating duo of the 90s was made up by Hristo Stoitxkov (1990-95) and 1996-98) and Romario (1993-95). In addition Laudrup’s creative contribution, the Bulgarian

Golden combination
Hristo Stoitxkov and Romario
and the Brazilian were the embodiment of attitude, power, accuracy and imagination on the pitch, a lethal combination that carried FC Barcelona to its fourth consecutive Liga title and to the final of the Champions League. The two footballers went on to seduce the world with their football in the 1994 World Cup.
Patrick Kluivert and Rivaldo
Patrick Kluivert (1998-04) and Rivaldo (1997-02) led FC Barcelona into the 21st century. The combination of the Dutchman’s elegant right foot with the Brazilian’s left proved lethal to Barça’s opponents. They carried the team to a 1998/99 Liga title, and that same year, despite playing on the wing under Van Gaal’s orders, the Brazilian claimed the Ballon d’Or award.

Magic and character
Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o
The most recent duo to grace the Camp Nou’s pitch was made up by Ronaldinho (2003-08) and Samuel Eto’o (2004-09). They helped the team to back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006, as well as the Champions League crown. The two players combined for a total of 263 goals. Ronaldinho led the team with his creativity and Eto’o stood out for this pace, hunger in front of goal and character.

FC BARCELONA
